Hong Kong Golf Club at Fanling has more fan thrills in store

Hong Kong opened its arms to LIV Golf at a thrilling tournament in 2024 that showcased the passion for the sport in this corner of Asia.

Now some of the world’s top golfers can look forward to receiving another warm welcome as we return to the Hong Kong Golf Club at Fanling on March 7-9.

Golf has a long history in the former colony, and Abraham Ancer wrote a proud new chapter when he won the 2024 event at the HK Golf Club.

The sport is hugely popular in Asia’s World City, and the eyes of golf fans around the world will be on Hong Kong as the elite gather to face off again over three days of rip-roaring competition.

It’s never too soon to book if you’re planning to attend the event – make sure of your place now by exploring our ticketing and hospitality options.

Familiar challenge for many at Fanling Golf Club

The Hong Kong Golf Club at Fanling has been the scene of some famous sporting moments over the years, not least in 2024’s LIV Golf event.

Abraham Ancer of Fireballs GC claimed his first LIV Golf title after a playoff against Cameron Smith and Paul Casey.

And the Mexican star was stunned by the dedication with which fans at the course followed the action. “It was incredible,” said Ancer.

“Even when we were getting the trophy, it was pouring with rain outside, and everybody was out there. Everybody was extremely supportive. I felt like there was great energy on every hole.”

Crushers GC, led by Bryson DeChambeau, took the team event – their second victory in a row after triumphing in Jeddah – thanks to a late comeback in the third round.

The HK Golf Club is one of Asia’s premier golf courses, and has staged the Hong Kong

Open annually since 1959. Its most recent edition, in late 2024, saw US stalwart Patrick Reed take the title.

His race to victory was fuelled by an amazing third round of 59 and Reed – a member of 4Aces GC –  was typically downbeat after that incredible feat.

“Yeah, you know, it was kind of one of those days,” said Reed. “I stepped up on that first tee and did a great drive, and then from that point on, just quality iron shots, leaving myself a lot of really good looks, and was able to make a lot of putts.”

Old course with long history awaits today’s superstars

The Hong Kong Golf Club was founded as long ago as 1889, and in its early days members played at Happy Valley.

In 1911, the club built its Old Course at Fanling, with the New Course following 20 years later. The Eden Course was added in 1970, and the club also owns the Deep Water Bay course, some 40km to the south of the Fanling site.

The 2024 LIV Golf event was played over a composite course measuring 6,710 yards.

That’s a lot shorter than most championship layouts, and placed a premium on accuracy off the tee.

Cameron Smith, who lost out to Ancer in the individual playoff, described it as “a smart person’s golf course”.

Bryson DeChambeau, who led Crushers GC to victory in the team event, said: “It’s definitely a unique test. There’s a lot of shot shaping you’ve got to have out here, and your iron play has to be on point.”

Membership and green fees at HK Golf Club

The Hong Kong Golf Club is one of the most prestigious and exclusive clubs in Asia. Of the 7.5 million people crammed into Hong Kong, one of the most densely populated areas in the world, only 2,500 are members here – and new memberships have been closed for some time.

So how much does it cost? Well, as the old saying goes, if you have to ask, you can’t afford it. Corporate membership is HK$18million, which is about $2.32m.

The monthly subscription for a married couple is HK$3,815 – just under $500 – while for singles it’s HK$2,805, about $360.

If you can secure a visitor’s tee time, and have a Hong Kong ID card, the green fee is just over $200, while without an HKID it’s $270 per player.

Those lucky enough to play here need to abide by the dress code, which says all players “should observe a reasonable and conservative standard of dress and not wear any garment likely to cause offence to others”.
