Who’ll make capital gains at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club DC?
Washington DC is the eighth stop on the 2025 LIV Golf tour of top golfing destinations.
Players and fans are in for a stunning treat when they arrive in the capital of the USA.
The non-stop action of LIV Golf will light up the spectacular, stately, and seriously testing Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, just 30 miles west of the White House.
This awesome course bears the name of the father of modern golf architecture, Robert Trent Jones. Hailed as the father of modern golf course design, Jones designed more than 500 courses – but he regarded this one as particularly special.
That’s how anyone who makes it to this corner of the capital’s suburbs is likely to feel too, as some of the very best golfers in the world battle for supremacy on June 6-8.
Our event takes place the week before the 2025 US Open at Oakmont, across the state border in Pennsylvania, where LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau will be defending his title.
Bryson and the other top players gearing up for Major action could not hope for a better place to hone their game. The competition at Robert Trent Jones is sure to be fast and furious – and you could be there to savor every pulsating minute.
"This is my masterpiece" – Robert Trent Jones Golf Club Virginia
Robert Trent Jones had retired after a stellar career redefining golf course architecture when he flew over a promising 850-acre site next to Lake Manassas. A letter he sent to the landowner in 1973 said: “I want to tell you how enthusiastic I am about your property.”
He poured his decades of experience into creating a course worthy of his name that would be an elite venue close to DC. Construction started in 1988, the course opened in 1991, and Jones said: “The terrain is perfect. I don’t think we could have done anything better anywhere.”
He added: “This is my masterpiece.” No player or spectator who has visited in the years since has been inclined to disagree.
The club quickly established a reputation as a premier destination, and just three years after it opened it hosted the first Presidents Cup. The clash between a USA team and an International lineup would return three times to this special spot.
On the last occasion it was played here, in 2005, LIV Golf legend Phil Mickelson was in the American squad led by Jack Nicklaus that defeated Gary Player’s International team.
Top-level golf returned to Robert Trent Jones in 2015, when it hosted the PGA Tour event, the Quicken Loans National, won by Troy Merritt. The course was also the stage for the 2024 Solheim Cup, in which the USA beat Europe to claim the trophy for the first time since 2017.
Now many of the world’s top players are on their way back to this superlative lakeside venue in Gainesville.
Exclusive golf club in matchless surroundings
The Robert Trent Jones Golf Club is a private facility owned by its members. If you are not a member, the only way to play is as an invited guest.
As for the membership cost? Back in 2017, when former US President Barack Obama joined, the annual fees were said to be about $15,000. It will have risen since – and that figure wouldn’t include your initiation fee.
Those who have been lucky enough to play this layout have delivered glowing reviews. “Wonderful golf course”, “The best stretch I have ever played”, “There really aren’t any weak holes”, and “One of America’s greatest courses” are among the tributes paid.
The course, like all of Jones’s designs, has plenty of water hazards – not surprising with the lake close by – steep-faced bunkers and large, rolling greens. It’s complemented by a magnificent clubhouse, built in the style of a Georgian mansion.
As you would expect at such an exclusive venue, there is an extensive dress code. Some LIV Golf players might be relieved to learn that Bermuda length shorts are “acceptable”.
