Legion XIII’s Tyrrell Hatton wins Dunhill Links Championship for third time
Legion XIII star Tyrrell Hatton won the prestigious Dunhill Links Championship on Sunday at the famed Old Course at St Andrews in Scotland.
Hatton shot a final-round 2-under 70 and defeated Nicolas Colsaerts by one shot to claim the event, which pairs professionals and amateurs over three courses. It's a tournament record third win for Hatton, who also tied the tournament record of 24-under par.
Hatton played all four days with his father Jeff, as his amateur partner. The duo finished second in the team competition at 46 under.
“It feels good,” Hatton said. "It’s the first time I’ve actually won a tournament with my dad here. It means a lot and to do it at the home of golf, it’s really special. I’m trying not to cry, to be honest. I’m a bit lost for words.”
On Saturday, Hatton tied the Old Course record with an 11-under 61 to take a one-shot lead over Colsaerts entering the final round.
Hatton led by three shots after a birdie at the 11th, but a double at the 13th, then a bogey at the 14th reduced his lead to one stroke. Colsaerts then birdied the 15th to grab a share of the lead.
But Hatton birdied the closing hole after a nice chip to within 3 feet for the victory.
"I didn't actually know what the scores were from when we left at the halfway house. The first leaderboard I saw was on the 17th green," said Hatton, who also has two runner-up finishes in this event.
"When I double bogeyed 13 and bogeyed 14, I didn't realize I was still in and around the lead and just tried my best on every shot coming in, and then I see where I'm at at the 17th green, then I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous.
"To have a 3-1/2 foot putt is quite nerve-wracking and I was so relieved when it went in."
Hatton, who won LIV Golf Nashville by six shots in June, was one of 14 LIV Golf members competing at the Dunhill Links Championship. Those who made the cut were David Puig (T4), Jon Rahm (T7), Brooks Koepka (T10), Dean Burmester (T12), Peter Uihlein (T19), Branden Grace (T35) and Patrick Reed (T35).
Puig, of Fireballs GC, shot 29 on the front nine after a run of six straight birdies before cooling off on the back nine to shoot 68, finishing at 19 under.
Rahm, the captain of Legion XIII, was six under on his first 10 holes before suffering three straight bogeys. Playing in his first tournament since the birth of his latest child, Rahm finished at 18 under.
Koepka shot a bogey-free 67 to finish at 17 under.
Missing the cut were Talor Gooch, Caleb Surratt, Eugenio Chacarra, Matt Jones, Louis Oosthuizen and Hudson Swafford.
