Torque GC Captain Niemann receives invite for 2025 Masters
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – For the second consecutive year, Joaquin Niemann will play the Masters via special invitation.
Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley announced Wednesday that the Torque GC Captain is one of two players accepting invitations to compete in the 2025 Masters, along with Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard.
The addition of Niemann means that 12 LIV Golf players are set to compete at the year's first major, April 10-13, at Augusta National. (See list below.)
“In support of Augusta National’s efforts to develop interest in golf globally, deserving international players not otherwise qualified have been invited throughout the Tournament’s history,” Ridley said in a press release. “The tradition continues as we welcome Nicolai and Joaquin back to the Masters, as both players have showcased their talent while competing around the world. We look forward to their arrival this April.”
Niemann received the same invitation a year ago, tying for 22nd. This year’s Masters start will be the sixth of his career; his best result was a tie for 16th in 2023.
“I was pretty confident that it was going to happen,” Niemann said Wednesday about the invite, “but yeah, it's always nice to receive the call. You never know.”
The 26-year-old from Chile comes off a spectacular 2024 campaign in which he won two LIV Golf events – and started the season by shooting 59 at the season opener at Mayakoba – and finished second in the season-long Individual Championship race to Jon Rahm.
He ended the year with a third win at the final event of the Asian Tour’s International Series, the PIF Saudi International powered by Softbank Investment Advisers. That victory also made him the season-long International Series champion.
Niemann said his body of work in 2024 was the reason for receiving an invite for the 2025 Masters. In addition to his 14 starts in LIV Golf, Niemann played 10 other tournaments, including three majors as well as the Olympics.
“Obviously they see me playing around the world, but more than trying hard, I mean I had a great season on LIV and I feel like it goes more through that season on LIV,” Niemann said. “… Last year it was because of winning on the DP in Australia, but I also didn't have my best season on LIV – and now this year was great.”
Niemann will make his 23rd career start in a major in April at Augusta National. He remains in search of his first top-10 finish but has never been more confident, given his current form.
“I feel like I have played pretty bad on majors and it's something that I try to figure it out,” Niemann said. “But if I look at it the simple way is that it’s just four days of golf, so it's something that I've done before and I won before in four days against the best players.”
