BY THE NUMBERS: LIV GOLF'S RECORD-BREAKING AUSSIE EVENT
The first-ever LIV Golf Adelaide event broke records on and off the course as the tournament cements itself in the landscape of Australia’s major sporting events.
The inaugural LIV Golf Adelaide tournament made its highly anticipated and overwhelmingly successful debut last weekend, welcoming capacity crowds to The Grange Golf Club while setting ground-breaking records on and off the course.
Held April 21-23, LIV Golf’s first event in Australia marked the introduction of the league’s innovative format in the Southern Hemisphere, with many players on LIV's star-studded roster playing on Australian soil for the first time, bringing elite golf to a previously starved market of over 25 million people.
With an official attendance of 77,076, LIV Golf Adelaide firmly cemented its newly carved-out position in Australia’s landscape of major international sporting events. Numbers from on and off the green at LIV Golf Adelaide included:
37 - Different countries represented by LIV Golf Adelaide ticket purchasers
10-under 62 - Score by winner Talor Gooch in rounds 1 and 2, breaking the record for best round related to par in LIV Golf history. Gooch’s 62 tied a LIV Golf record for lowest score, and he is the only player to shoot 62 twice.
47 - Strokes under par by 4Aces GC, a LIV Golf record for lowest team counting score, breaking the 45 under set last year by Fireballs GC in Bangkok
55 million - Number of video views on social media across league channels
116,978 - 12-ounce beers sold on-site
23,390 - Units of LIV Golf and team merchandise sold
16 - Hours spent in Australia by DJ sensation FISHER, who traveled to Adelaide between performances at the 2023 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in California to perform for a sold-out LIV Golf Adelaide crowd
66 - Walkout songs selected by players throughout the weekend at the par-3 12th Watering Hole, including: Avicii – Levels and AC/DC – Back in Black (Dustin Johnson), Eminem – Lose Yourself (Phil Mickelson), Fisher – Losing It and DarylBraithwaite – The Horses (Cameron Smith) and Destiny’s Child – Say My Name (Talor Gooch)
1 - Number of holes-in-one – Chase Koepka, Sunday at the par-3 12th
Cameron Smith, captain of the all-Australian Ripper GC team said of the tournament: “I would go as far as to say this is the best event I’ve ever played.
“I think I’m probably biased a little bit being from Australia, but this is what LIV Golf is about.”
On what was one of his few playing appearances in Australia, six-time major champion, World Golf Hall of Famer and captain of HyFlyers GC Phil Mickelson said: “[LIV Golf Adelaide] is really an example of what is possible, and a new opportunity to present golf in a different way and have a different energy and a different feel.
“What LIV Golf has provided is a great alternative for the traditional ways of golf, and the people here in Australia have embraced it, and so you see a whole different energy.”
South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said: “[LIV Golf Adelaide] exceeded my expectations the moment those tickets went on sale and they sold out within minutes.
“The anticipation has been here from the get-go… What we're particularly excited about, if I'm frank, is that the power of the game of golf at such a high elite professional level, to be able to draw the eyes of the nation, indeed internationally, on our city and our state. That is a wholeheartedly good thing, and we're very grateful to have this partnership with LIV to be able to deliver that.
“From my perspective, it didn't take much of a genius to work out that there is an appetite for high-quality golf in Australia. We've been yearning for this. LIV provides us the opportunity to enjoy that and experience that.
“It is the South Australian economy that will be a major beneficiary of it.”
LIV Golf’s “Après Golf” entertainment, a popular component of the league’s global tournaments, also featured at LIV Golf Adelaide, with Australian DJ sensation FISHER headlining Friday night’s live performance, ahead of contemporary rockers Birds of Tokyo and South Australia’s own Electric Fields taking the stage on Saturday and Sunday night respectively.
Due to incredible demand, and for the first time in LIV Golf’s young history, event organisers also opened the gates for fans to watch LIV Golf’s stars play the course alongside amateur golfers in the Pro-Am on Thursday, April 20.
The first truly global golf league features 14 tournaments in seven different countries as many of the sport’s biggest names continue their pursuit of the LIV Golf League Individual Championship and Team Championship.
This week, the league visits the famed Serapong course at Sentosa Golf Club for the fifth tournament of the season, LIV Golf Singapore presented by Resorts World Sentosa. Regarded as one of the world’s best golf courses, the Serapong’s iconic layout, with fast, challenging greens, trademark contours and signature holes will challenge the field of 48 for the league’s first visit to Singapore.
