The true story behind Cam Smith’s blue blazer (hint: it involves beer)

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Ripper GC Captain Cameron Smith caused quite a stir on the eve of this week’s Masters when he wore a blue blazer during his Wednesday practice session.
After his opening 1-under 71 on Thursday, Smith provided the back story.

During LIV Golf’s Teams Week in early January in West Palm Beach, Florida – when all teams and players gather for meetings, marketing shoots and other offseason business – Smith met up with Charlie Schaefer, the found of Greyson Clothiers, the Rippers’ new apparel sponsor.
And then …
“We had a couple of beers,” Smith said. “Maybe even a couple too many beers, and we got to talking about fashion.
“He said, ‘It would be great if you wore a blazer at the Masters. I think it’s the place to do it,’ and I agreed to it.
“I’m a man of my word, so I did it.”
So there was Smith on Wednesday, wearing the company’s Sequoia Blazer, with the Ripper logo on one side and Greyson’s logo on the other, both subtly displayed in the same blue color.
It took social media by storm, producing a broad range of reactions. Not that Smith saw any of it, since he’s doesn’t spend much time on those channels.

He said the blazer – part of Greyson’s activewear; he also wore matching blue slacks – was comfortable and stretchy and did not constrict him in any way while swinging a club.
“For how a sport coat or a blazer should feel, that one I was able to swing in pretty easy,” he said. “It was a bit chilly, so it kind of worked out. … I wouldn’t say I’m a fashion guru by any standard, but I felt good in it.”
Fellow Australian Jason Day – who himself has pushed the boundaries of fashion; in fact, he was asked by Masters officials to tone down some of his Malbon outfits this week – came over to have a close look.
Asked on Thursday what he thought of the blazer, Day replied: “You know what, dude, I don’t knock anything. Honesty, you’ve seen what I’ve worn in the past, so I clearly don’t knock anything. I think it looked great. If he rocks it, then I’m happy for him.
“I actually went up to him and felt it, and felt his pants. I’m like, if he can play in it, great. I would have buttoned it up. I would have had at least one buttoned, but he played with it open. I don’t mind it.
“I could see myself playing in something like that. So just putting it out there.”
